Flåm is a tiny village at the inner tip of the Aurlandsfjord, a narrow arm of the Sognefjord walled by steep mountains and laced with waterfalls. It earns the day as the launch point for the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest standard-gauge train lines in the world, and for fjord cruises into the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, both reachable on foot from the ship.

What to do on a day in Flåm

• Ride the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) up to Myrdal, a roughly one-hour climb past the Kjosfossen waterfall, with the station about 300 meters from the ship
• Take a fjord cruise from Flåm into the Nærøyfjord toward Gudvangen, a narrow UNESCO World Heritage fjord, often on a quiet electric vessel
• Visit the Flåm Railway Museum next to the station, free and a good rainy-hour option
• Stop at the Ægir BrewPub, a stave-church-styled craft brewery a short walk from the dock
• Hike to the Brekkefossen waterfall, a steep roughly one-hour climb with valley and fjord views
• Walk the flat 3.5 km path to the 17th-century Flåm Church through the valley farmland

Getting ashore

Ships dock right at the village, with the train station and waterfront shops 200 to 300 meters away, so there is no transfer to reach anything. One day is enough to pair the railway with a short walk or a fjord cruise, but not to do both the full train and the full Nærøyfjord cruise unhurried.

Weather and when to visit

• May (shoulder, season opening). Typical highs around 9 to 13C, the driest month of the local year, with cool mornings and unpredictable mix of mist, rain, and sun. Long daylight.
• June to August (peak fjord cruise season). The mildest stretch, typical highs around 13 to 17C with the longest daylight of the year. July is the warmest but also one of the wetter months, so rain gear is worth carrying.
• September (autumn shoulder). Cooling toward highs near 9C with rainfall climbing, often crisp clear mornings between fronts. Lower crowds than midsummer.
