Gustavia is the harbor capital of St Barths, a small French island that has deliberately kept large cruise ships out, so only luxury lines anchor offshore and tender in. The waterfront is a tight grid of red-roofed Swedish-era buildings, French bistros, and luxury boutiques wrapped around a yacht harbor, with two old forts and a shell beach all within a short walk.

What to do on a day in Gustavia

• Fort Gustave and its lighthouse, a roughly 10-minute uphill walk from the harbor for the best panoramic view over the red roofs and yacht basin
• Shell Beach (Anse de Grand Galet), about 10 minutes on foot south of the tender dock, where the sand is made of crushed seashells
• Wall House Museum, a restored 1791 Swedish-era stone building on the harbor with rotating local-history exhibits
• Quai de la Republique, the harborfront promenade lined with duty-free boutiques and cafes steps from where the tenders land
• Fort Karl, the ruins of the second hillside fort, a short walk above Shell Beach with quieter views

Getting ashore

Ships anchor in the outer harbor and tender into Port de Plaisance at the center of town, so you step off into Gustavia itself with no shuttle needed. The whole town is walkable in an afternoon and one day is plenty; just note that tender operations can be cancelled in heavy swell.

• December to April (the typical call window). Typically dry and breezy, daytime highs around 82 to 86 F, low humidity, and steady northeast trade winds. February is usually the driest month; rainfall ticks up a little toward April.
